Letter from the Editor – Spring 2026

Dear Readers,

This spring, The Fifth Corner will publish its inaugural issue.

Issue No. 1 presents six works of original fiction, each paired with commissioned graphite artwork created in direct dialogue with the stories. The issue has been arranged deliberately; each piece alters the one that follows it.

From its beginning, the journal has been guided by a simple conviction: that fiction benefits from care — from structure, from visual context, and from editorial intention.

The Fifth Corner is committed to publishing dark and speculative literary work that is atmospheric, rigorous, and enduring. Each quarterly issue commissions original writing and artwork, and compensates all contributors.

On Patronage

Literary journals do not survive by accident.

They endure because readers choose to stand behind them.

Each issue of The Fifth Corner commissions six writers and one artist. Contributor honoraria for a single quarterly issue total approximately $2,000 CAD. Patronage ensures that Issue No. 2 and those that follow are not tentative, but sustained.

To support the journal is to support:

Writer honoraria
Commissioned artwork
Independent editorial direction
The continued publication of work that might not otherwise find a home

If this kind of publication matters to you, we invite you to stand with us.

With appreciation,
Aliona Ciumac
